Omo Awa Guidelines

Listed below is the revised Omo Awo Training Guidelines. All Omo Awos are required
to obey these instructions as prescribed by Ifa for a period of 7 Full Moons, twenty-eight
days per month. Non- adherence can lead to the termination of Omo Awo status.
(Spiritual Development Requires Discipline and Perseverance)

Seven Full Moon Guidelines

Each Omo Awo must receive their first 17 day reading from Ifa (Etadogun) and
complete instructions, offerings and ebos.
All requirements specified by Ifa must be completed prior to the due date of the
next reading before another reading can be done.
• Attend Sunday morning conference calls, complete homework studies and be
prepared to
participate without referring to notes from Training Guide.
• Be ready to host conference call when assigned. It is the responsibility of Omo
Awos to be
available to host call when requested.
• Erect an ancestor’s shrine in your Ile (house). See Training Guide for details
• Learn how to divine and consult the Egungun using Obi Obata. Remember to
venerate and feed your ancestors, daily.
• Learn how to Invoke, Anoint and Wash before casting Obi Obata divination,
memorize the invocation chant for Egungun and consult only to Egungun.
(Consult Obi Obata only not Odus! Do not consult needlessly or redundantly and
never consult Obi Obata in contest to instructions from Ifa, this is a Taboo)
• Study the training materials on the Yoruba Traditional 4 day week. Live by these
guidelines!
• Study the Odu Chart and be prepared to respond correctly when called upon by
the host during Sunday Conference calls.
• Cleanse the Ile (house) every full moon (28 day cycle) using Sage and Florida
Water. Alternative incense and oils can be used.
• Give reverence to Ori, Orunmila, Ancestors and Orishas the first of each morning
before speaking to anyone!!! Start by silently giving thanks to inner spirit (Ori).
Then wash face, arms and legs. Next, go to the ancestor’s shrine, salute Esu and
recite the prayers to Orunmila and the ancestors.

Notes

  • New Omo Awos are not required to host a conference until after receiving 2
(two) Etadogun 17 day reading from lfa.
  • Omo Awo must inform Babalawo of the due date of the 17 day reading 3
days in advance. Failure to do this will require the student, Omo Awo, to
start back at the beginning of the 7 Full Moon Program! Esu must be
consulted and may need to be appeased before continuing the program.
  • All Omo Awos who successfully complete the 7 Full Moons Program will be
    celebrated.
  • Completion or participation in program qualifies the Omo Awo to become
initiated into the priesthood of Egungun.

lfa Student Development Process

Step #1

Since the beginning of human existence our great ancestors revered fours (4) major aspects of Creation. First, there was the existence of the Divine Creator (God), who was responsible for “All of Creation “and totally incomprehensible by humans. Second, were the Orishas (Elemental Gods} who directly interacted with them and affected all aspects of daily life. There were the Ancestral Spirits; these were the spirits of the dead who communicated with them in spirit form after leaving the physical body. Also they recognized the spirit of their inner self (Ori) which provided personal power to connect with ALL.

As a result of the above outlined information, we recommended that the student of lfa
(Omo-Awo) start by physically and spiritually cleansing the lie (house) and erecting an
ancestral shrine. The student must then learn how to consult the Ancestors using Obi Obata Divination System four 4 Cowrie Shells. (See section on Obi Obata) Then, the first thing each morning , before speaking to anyone, the Omo Awo should go to the shrine, pray and pour lib, ation in reverence to all the spirits aforementioned. Another major focus during the first 6 months of training should be on learning the 16 Major Odus, their order of seniority, patterns and basic meaning. lfa readings should be received every 17 days (Etadogun). Special attention should be given to, prayers, meditation, offerings, daily study, chants, and ancestral songs.

Step #2

Next, the student should start preparation for initiation to Egungun. During this period the
student should learn how to throw one (1) leg of Odu and determine Ire or lbi. Also, the
student should gather all the materials needed for the consecration of their ancestral pots. Consecration of the ancestral pot may take place before or after the initiation to Egungun depending on the guidance of lfa. During the ancestral initiation ceremony the student should receive Esu Gede Nimbo and an Ancestral Staff. Note: During all phases of development the student should continue to receive (Etadogun) 17 day readings and study information on Odu lfa.

Step #3

Directly following the initiation to Egungun the Omo Awa should receive THE ORISHA
WARRIORS, for assurance of spiritual protection and direction. These warriors must be
prepared and presented by an experienced Babalawo or lyanifa, who has been properly
trained on how to make orisha warriors. The warriors are Esu, Ogun, Osun and Ochosi. The student must be taught how to feed and work with these warriors!

Step #4

The student should now be ready to (Kofa- lfa} or receive one hand of lfa; however it is
recommended that lfa be consulted before moving forward with this Step. It should be made clear to the student that this “Hand of lfa” should not be used for divination; it is strictly for prayer and meditation purposes only. During this period the student should be learning the basics on divination. This involves diligent attention details, careful observation of rituals, asking questions and practicing techniques. The student must commit to learning the sacred lfa prayer, which must be recited every morning before any word is spoken or task is done. Each morning the Omo-Awo must pour libation to Ori, lfa, Orisha and Egungun at sunrise and give thanks. Also, they should memorize the 16 (sixteen) major and 240 minor odus, along with the meaning, stanzas, chants, orisha and Ebos.

Step #5

The Omo-Awo may receive a reading from lfa to become initiated to either Orisha or lfa. If the student is divined to become an Initiate of lfa, they must be willing go through all the sacred rituals required for that initiation. After the initiation the student becomes an AWO in training and starts a life long journey of study, prayer and sacrifice.

How to Erect Ancestrial Shrine

  1. Select a location for the shrine. The shrine can be placed on a table or on the floor, located in the corner of the room. Choose a location that is private, such as a walk in closet, basement, bedroosm etc.
  2. The entire House (Ile) should be cleansed using sage and perfumed water. Pay special attention to the area where the Shrine will be placed. Sing chants/songs to Egungun while cleansing the house and shrine area.
  3. Put a white cloth on the floor or table of the shri ne area selected. This is where all of the articles of the shrine will place.
  4. The shrine should be divided into two sides. The items on the right side of the shrine are for the Father (Baba) and his relatives and the left side is for the Mother (Yeye) and her relatives.

The following is a list of Items to be placed on the Shrine:

  • Pictures – Father and Mother i n addition to any other honored ancestors of the family.
  • Personal Items owned by the a ncestors – clothes, jewelry, artifacts, trophies, awards etc.
  • Candles – one on the father side and one on the mother’s side.
  • Plant in Soil – This will be used to pour l ibation during m orn ing prayers.
  • 9 glasses of water – The 9th child of Orisha Oya was Egungun. Egungun number is nine.
  • Change water weekly.
  • Flowers and designs – decorate the shrine well!
  • Egungun doll for the father side and mother’s side. (Optional)
  • Incense and money
  • Always keep plenty of t he a ncestor’s favorite food and drink on the Shrine. This can be liquor, cigars, beer, coffee, tea, meals prepared for the household etc. Feed the Ancestors whenever a large meal is prepared for the household or whenever one of their favorite dishes is cooked. (Consult ancestors with Obi Obata to take off food).

* Upon initial set-up of the shrine, consult the ancestors using Obi Obata for their approval.
If you do not receive an approval, just ask them what else is needed. *

Egun Altar: A place to honor and visit with the Ancestors

In the African tradition, ancestors now live in the spirit world and often intervene in the lives of their descendants. To neglect them is to welcome imbalance and ill fortune. We show them reverence and love by offering fruit, water and even a portion of our meals placed on the shrine. It is customary to light a candle whenever an offering is presented.

After the Shrine has been erected, the four cowry shells (Obi Obata Divination) can be used to consult the ancestors whenever you need clarity on an issue or conflict resolution. It is also an ideal place for meditation and prayer. You will find no better place for peace of mind and relaxation than at your ancestor’s shrine.

How to Break Kola and Cast Obi

  • Hold kola nut to the Heavens, say “From the Creator comes ALL EXISTENCE represented by the whole of the Kola Nut. “He or she who breaks kola, the favorite nut of lfa shall live long, shall have abundance and peace of mind.”
  • Break the kola nut into 2 halves, then say “It is from the darkness that duality is born.”
  • Place one half of the kola nut facing down in the left hand for darkness and the other half in the right hand facing up for light.
  • Hold the left hand up and declare “From darkness comes light,” thenraise the right hand.
  • Place the kola in the right hand on the right side of the mat a nd the kola in the left hand on the left side of the mat.

Odu lfa Mother of Creation

“The Great Darkness”

The duality of Contraction and Expansion are the two fundamental laws that gave birth to all of Creation. It was from the unknown realm of “Triple Darkness” that all known “Matter of light and dark energy particles” were born. (So above So below)

All of the 16 Major and 240 Minor Odus symbolize this spiritual phenomenon, as all of the Odu markings represent elements of Darkness (contraction) and/or Light (expansion) “Oyeku is the owner of Ogbe”

Energy is born from the Unknown Darkness of space and takes the form of an “egg shape” structure called a sphere or Spiro. This sphere consists of two polar opposites with fours portals on the right (male side) and four portals on the left (female side). These eight portals are the link between the fourth dimension of Matter (time and space) and the fifth dimension of the invisible realm of Creation. Mathematically, there are 256 ways in which energy can pass from the invisible to the visible dimensions as these two dimensions of four polar opposites intersect.

As a correlation, each of the 256 Odu /fa patterns has two legs, representing the polar opposites found in all energy patterns, one leg on the right (male side) with four markings representing the portals of darkness/light and one leg on the left (female side) with four markings representing darkness/light.

According to the ancient wisdom of our ancestors, Odu 0/un Meji · (16th Odu) is symbolized as the Cosmic Egg of Creation (Original Energy Sphere). This Odu pattern was the first pattern born out of The Great Darkness into light of Creation.

It was from Ofun Meji that the other 15 Major Odu Patterns of darkness and or light received their formations and meanings. Each one of the 16 odus combined with each of the other 15 Odu patterns for a total of 16 X 16 = 256.

Ofun Meji as illustrated by the three dimensional energy pattern of the Cosmic Egg represents the origin of energy formation, duality of the polar opposites, cardinal points of universal direction, and the four portals of darkness/light, representing the birth of Creation! “Ifa is Eleri Ipin”

Therefore, as we can now clearly see, Odu lfa (Divine Mystery System), designed by our ancient a ncestors millions of years before the birth of modern sciences, directly parallels and symbolizes the most recent scientific discoveries relating to how energy was birthed i nto the Universe. Hence, due to this u nderstanding we must further conclude that our current knowledge is limited, a nd as such we have no other choice but rely on the proven Spiritual Scientology developed by our ancients. We must learn to use this information as a study guide in the u nderstanding of ourselves, and the universe from which we are literally not just figuratively apart.

Importance of Lunar Calender

The calendar is a tool for time measurement and management which dictates how we schedules our activities in
harmony with what happens in this physical dimension of time and space. It is for this reason we must take into
account all solar influences, cycles, patterns and their impact on our Mother Earth.

In order for human beings to live in an orderly and harmonious fashion, we must once again regain our balance of
nature by learning how to be in sync with the cycles and patterns of the universe which we are literally not just
figuratively apart. This will allow us to more easily transcend both physical and spiritual difficulties, which will open
our pathway to the manifestation of divine destiny.

The Gregorian calendar established by the Roman Catholic Church, limits our natural access to spiritual power and
magnetism that emanates from the natural cycles of the earth. This current timetable is in harmonious, irregular,
irrational and produces harmful consequences on our society. This is the primary source of manifest ignorance,
sickness, slavery, greed and materialism. We are currently suffering under a hypnotic charm that forces us to
follow a regular pattern of harmonic imbalance that is inconsistent with the parameters in which the universe is
governed.

Let us began by looking at the numbers! The universe speaks to us by signs, symbols and numbers, these factors
have been our foundation for both spiritual and scientific study since the beginning of human existence. In the
study of numerology the number four (4) is the number of Manifestation. Please pay close attention to the
importance of the number four (4) as it relates to all aspects of Creation and universal balance as we move
forward.

First, there are four main elements; earth, water, fire and air. Energy at birth takes the shape of a Spiro/Sphere
which has four cardinal points; north, south, east and west. Also, the energy sphere has two sides, each of which
has four portals for a total of eight ways that light can pass from the invisible realm of Creation into the visible
realm of matter. “So Above So Below”

The Solar Year is composed of four seasons, starting with the Summer Solstice, Autumn, Winter and Spring. Each
of these four seasons has 91 days, for a total of 364 days per year.

An earth day is the time it takes for the earth to rotate on its axis with respect to the Sun. Earth days are divided
into four equal parts of 6 hrs each for total of 24 hours per day. Starting with sunrise at dawn, the zenith at
midday, sunset at dusk then returns to sunrise.

A lunar cycle (month) is the time it takes the moon to complete an orbit around the earth which is 28 days. The
moon cycles thru four major phases within this 28 day period ; New moon, 1st quarter, Full moon and Third
quarter, which is consistent with the four Cardinal Points of the Universe!

The Traditional Yoruba Calendar, which predates the Roman Catholic Church’s Gregorian calendar by over 9,000
plus years, is consistent throughout with Divine Numerology of Manifestation. There are four seasons per year,
four major lunar cycles per month, four days per week and four equal parts to each day.

Please regard this information as a matter of immediate survival. Start now to make the changes necessary to
save your life and everyone you know. Share this information; do research into the 28 day (month) lunar cycle 4 day
week. Then, consistently make changes in your daily activities to align with the divine law of manifestation which
governs the universe. This will open your path way to an abundant life of better health, prosperity and peace of
mind. “As we know better we must learn to do better” ASE

Prayer to Orunmila / lfa

Orun m ila, j ust as you wake u p every morn i ng to give greeting to Olod umare, we too give tha n ks to you for guiding us thru o u r sleep, to see this morning and look forward to the chores of a nothe r day. We thank you most especial ly for not a l l owing us to offend our fel low men and women throughout yesterday, because a s you have proclaimed; your children should be able to tell you every morning that they have succeeded in resisting the tem ptation to do any wrong against Olodumare, the 200 divinities, and all of the children of God and the societies in which they live. Furthermore, in accordance with your  injunction, we have refrained from avenging all wrongs, done to us, by our friends, relations and foes; for we have done and will continue to do, good turns to neutralize any evil plans that might be made against us; just as you will neutralize any evil that we may plan against our fellow men and women, for as you have proclaimed this is the key to long life and enduring prosperity!

Oh, Orunmila! (Eleri I pin) Witness of fate, Second only to Olodumare; Thou are far more efficacious than medicine, Thou art the Immense Orbit that avert the day of premature death, our Lord, Almighty to save, mysterious Spirit that fought death, to thee our salutation is due first of every morning. Thou art the Equilibrium that adjusts all World Forces; thou art the one whose exertion it is to reconstruct the creature of bad lot, repairer of ill-luck. He or she who knows you in full becomes immortal. Protect us today as always from all evil i n our homes, place of work and interactions with others. Our Lord, the undisputed king, Perfect in the House of Wisdom ! Our Lord, Infinite in knowledge, for not knowing thee in fu ll, we are but futile; Awe, if we could but only
know thee in full, all would be well with us. ASE
